About the village of Glavatartsi

History of the village of Glavatartsi

The village of Glavatartsi is located in the heart of the Eastern Rhodopes, at an altitude of 368 meters above sea level. It is situated on a scenic hill between two arms of the Kardzhali Reservoir, making it one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the region.

Ancient history

This area has been inhabited for thousands of years and bears witness to the continuous presence of various civilizations and cultures. Thracians, Hellenes, Romans, Slavs, Proto-Bulgarians, Byzantines, and Latins once lived on these lands, leaving traces of their rich historical heritage.

Recent history

After the region of Kardzhali became part of the Principality of Bulgaria in 1912, the village was recorded as a small but stable settlement with around 40 buildings, 50 households, and approximately 240 residents distributed across five hamlets. At that time, the village was known as Emir-Oglar.

In 1934, the village was renamed Glavatari, and in 1966 it received its current name – Glavatartsi.

The most populated hamlet was the one located near the banks of the Arda River.

Development of the modern area

In 1957, the construction of the Kardzhali Reservoir began, which led to the gradual relocation of the population to the present-day village of Glavatartsi and the nearby village of Enchets.

The modern development of the area began in 1984 with the construction of the forestry villa “Kardzhali Forest Enterprise”. By 1990, there were already about six buildings in the area, mainly used as holiday villas.

Between 1989 and 1995, the village was almost depopulated, after which a new stage of development began. The natural beauty, tranquility, and proximity to the city of Kardzhali attracted new residents and visitors.

Today, Glavatartsi is a preferred destination both for permanent living and for holidays, thanks to its unique nature and stunning views of the Kardzhali Reservoir.
